What Is a Drum Machine?

A drum machine is an electronic music tool that lets you create, edit, and play back drum patterns and rhythmic sequences. You can build your own beats using sounds such as kicks, snares, hi-hats, and percussion elements, then loop them at your chosen tempo (BPM).

Drum machines first became popular in the 1970s and 1980s as studio production tools, quickly becoming essential in genres like hip-hop, techno, house, and electronic music. Today, they remain a key part of modern music production and beat making.

With this online drum machine, there’s nothing to install and no previous experience is required. It runs directly in your browser and includes 4 drum kits, plus 20 beat patterns inspired by different music styles that you can customize and remix.

How to Use the Drum Machine

Follow these steps to start creating beats online:

  1. Set up the main parameters such as tempo (BPM), drum kit, volume, and swing. If you prefer, select a preset pattern and all settings will be configured automatically.
  2. Create or edit the rhythm patterns for each track by enabling or disabling steps in the sequencer grid.
  3. Press Play or hit the spacebar to start loop playback.

Controls

This Beatmaker includes the following controls:

Kit

Choose from 4 drum kits: Acoustic Drums, Classic 808, Club EDM, and Hard Trap Arsenal.

Preset Pattern

Select from 20 preset beat patterns covering different music genres. Each preset includes its own BPM, drum kit, swing settings, and volume mix. You can modify any preset to fit your style.

BPM

Set the tempo of your beat in BPM (beats per minute). Use the slider, type an exact value, or adjust it with the + and – buttons.

Volume & Swing

Adjust the master volume of the drum machine and control the amount of swing applied to the beat patterns.

  • Swing adds groove and a more human feel to rhythms by shifting the timing of certain notes, creating a less rigid and more natural rhythm.

FX

Enable FX to apply both reverb and delay effects to playback. Each effect includes its own control slider and 4 built-in presets.

Save & Load

Save your custom beat patterns so you can use them again anytime. Click the Save button and give your project a name. Later, reopen it using the Load button.

Step Sequencer

Create your rhythm pattern using 9 instrument tracks and 16 steps representing a 4-beat measure. Each drum kit assigns different sounds to the 9 tracks.

Track Volume, Solo & Mute

Build your own mix by adjusting the volume of individual tracks and emphasizing the sounds you want to stand out.

You can also activate Solo (S) to hear only selected tracks or Mute (M) to silence specific tracks. Global controls at the top let you clear all Solo or Mute settings instantly.

Play & Reset

Press Play or use the spacebar to start playback, then press again to stop. A dedicated button is also available to reset the online drum machine.

Recording

The recording feature is currently under development and will be available soon. The goal is to allow you to record, export, and download your own beats while editing them live in real time.

Mobile & Tablet Support

The beat maker is fully touch-enabled on smartphones and tablets, allowing you to interact with every visible control.

In portrait mode, the sequencer is compressed, so you may need to scroll horizontally to access all 16 steps. You can also rotate your device to landscape mode for a full view of the sequencer grid.
