Online Metronome
What Is a Metronome?
A metronome is a device that keeps a steady musical pulse at a constant speed, measured in BPM (beats per minute). It is an essential tool for musicians looking to improve rhythmic accuracy, timing, and tempo control.
Perfect for practicing technical exercises, developing timing skills, and preparing musical pieces at their target performance tempo.
How to Use the Online Metronome
Follow these steps to get started with this free online metronome:
- Select your tempo or desired BPM.
- Adjust additional settings such as time signature, first beat accent, volume level, subdivisions, timer settings for automatic stop, and metronome sound.
- Press Play or hit the spacebar to start the metronome.
Metronome Controls
This advanced online metronome includes the following controls:
Tempo (BPM):
You can adjust the metronome tempo or beats per minute (BPM) in several ways:
- Drag the tempo slider for quick adjustments between 20 and 300 BPM.
- Use the arrow buttons for precise BPM changes, one beat at a time.
- Click the BPM value to enter an exact number using your keyboard.
- Use the quick tempo presets for instant access to commonly used BPM values (desktop and large screens only).
- Use the TAP Tempo feature (explained below).
TAP Tempo:
The TAP Tempo feature lets you set the tempo manually by tapping the rhythm you want.
How to use it: with the metronome stopped, tap the TAP button 4 times at your desired rhythm. The system will calculate the BPM and automatically set it as the current tempo.
Volume:
Adjust the volume level of the metronome. Useful when playing an instrument on the same device at the same time.
Play / Stop:
Start or stop the metronome.
Beats per Measure & Time Signature:
Set the number of beats per measure. By default, the metronome uses a 4-beat measure.
- Use the + and – controls to increase or decrease the beat count.
- Or choose a time signature directly from the selector: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, or 6/8.
Accent First Beat:
Choose whether to play the metronome with an accented downbeat, making the first beat of each measure sound different.
BPM Presets:
Quickly switch between popular tempo settings. You can fine-tune the value afterward using the arrow controls.
- Preset BPM values: 60, 72, 84, 96, 108, 120, 144, and 168 BPM.
Subdivisions:
For advanced practice sessions, you can enable note subdivisions in addition to the main beats:
- Quarter Notes (×1) – one click per beat, the standard metronome setting.
- Eighth Notes (×2) – two clicks per beat.
- Triplets (×3) – three clicks per beat.
- Sixteenth Notes (×4) – four clicks per beat.
Subdivision clicks play at a lower volume than the main beats, helping maintain a clear rhythmic structure.
Timer:
Use the timer to automatically stop the metronome after a specified amount of time.
To configure it: with the metronome stopped, enable the timer and set the desired duration using the + and – buttons.
You can also click the time value and enter an exact duration using your keyboard (minutes and seconds).
Sound:
Choose your preferred metronome sound. Three presets are currently available:
- Click: a clean and neutral metronome sound.
- Modern High: a smooth, contemporary metronome click with a brighter tone.
- Modern Low: similar to Modern High, but deeper and more percussive.
Mobile & Tablet Use:
On smartphones and tablets, all controls are fully touch-enabled. BPM presets are hidden to keep the interface clean and optimized for smaller screens.
